INOX Multiplex In Chennai-Why is it so disabled unfriendly?
Submitted by sowmya simhan on Fri, 19/09/2008 - 11:36pm.

I have been wanting to go to Inox theatre for a long time. The geat fan fare with which it was opened and the reviews the theater got would arouse anybody's interest.
People said that Citi Center is very disabled friendly, has ramps, powered wheel chairs etc.I went there with lot of expectations.Well, it was a big disappointment. Yes, they have a ramp at the entrance of the hall. But its a very very steep one though there is lot of space there to have a ramp with the right gradient. The inside of the theater is totally disabled unfriendly. It is just like any other theater where you have a steep step for every row. Having gone inside, I somehow managed with great difficulty as I was given the 3rd row from the top.

The questions that today's experience has thrown up is
1. Do our people think that accessibility is all about having ramp irrespective of whether it is a good one or not.
2. It is very disheartening to note that these are all recent constructions completed may be in 2006. Space is just not a constraint. Then why are these so senselessly inaccessible?
3. Where is the mistake? Is it the insensitivity of the designers or is it the ROI calculations of the promoters that a little more investment on a disabled friendly environment does not translate well in monetary terms
Well, it could just be anything. An inaccessible environment is an inaccessible environment and nothing can be done about it.
When will all these change? Will it at all change?
